I'm not sure how Shake arrives at his BF3 USA player stats as he posted here

In the end too little, too late. Down to 12,000-15,000 players during peak times for the USA. Down to 7,850 servers from 12,000+. CQC will not be the answer.
But its prolly not off by much. Check the link in first post to see world stats for pc player count for BF3 and MW3.
BF3 clearly has the lead over MW3, but more importantly, is swinging back upto a peak of 60,000 with the CQ pak.
I did a casual inspect of gametracker.com for player count - for the world, I counted 7 pages of 50 servers each with mostly full 64 slots. When I set the search to USA, I counted only 1/2 page of full 64 slot servers, and a total of 7 pages of 50 servers each with players, down to 1 player per server - 350 servers with players.
I'm casually counting that the number of USA servers is under 1900 servers - 38 full pages at 50 servers per page.
When I count the # of pages at 50 servers per page for BF3 for the world, the count comes to 7700 - 154 pages.
That's down from a peak of 11,000 after the first month of BF3, that I can recall.
There is a Global Stats box on the home page of http://bf3stats.com - it shows that overall there are about 230,000 players in BF3 on the big 3 formats.
PC online 60,781
PS3 online 79,271
360 online 88,774
IIRC, that first month alone, PC BF3 saw over 200,000 - maybe as much as 250,000 players as a peak. Prolly wrong, but still . . . for a game that is 7.5 months old, that drop is quite a large drop.
Having typed all this, my feeling is that I will rent a 16 slot server specifically for these maps and game modes and let the increasing number of Premium ducks try it out on on a TBD server; otherwise the peasants' pond will empty.
